Unser digitales Gedächtnis ›››
We probably all possess a box filled with analogue family pictures - hopefully stored somewhere at a safe place. We are probably all also carrying a device filled with digital family pictures at all times - our smartphones, ideally at least weakly secured by a PIN or gesture. For the past two decades, digital technologies virtually entirely superseded analogue methods for preserving our memories, pictures for instance, especially those of our growing children. Smartphones, apps, social media, large online portals or "cloud-based" backup services are promising us protection and virtually free, everlasting archival storage. However, many times already, those promises proved to be short-lived. A computer becomes "obsolete" or breaks, malicious software hits, a smartphone gets lost, data assumed to be safe can not be retrieved anymore after a software update, storage media suddenly become unreadable, an online-service shuts down without prior notice and alternative, a user account disappears. An open question, pushed away by most of us, arises: How does one, independently, secure one's own digital memories for future generations? How does one archive the digital traces of one's life? We embark onto a journey, lengthy, inevitably frustrating, but also illustrative, through the world of data backup and protection.
